SONYBMG Music Entertainment

Sony BMG Music is one of the largest record companies in the world.  With artists spanning the spectrum of genres, this design spotlights some of the finest from jazz to hip-hop.

Created as a promotional item for the Sony BMG college marketing department, Coles collaborated with the company creatives to fashion an illustration staring the label’s current crop of chart toppers and the pioneers that paved their way.  Coles calls it a musical mosaic.

ADDY & FERRO

Nestled in the heart of downtown Brooklyn’s Fort Greene section, Addy & Ferro is one of the hippest trips in town.  Inspired by contemporary art, classic music and clever design, the shop is at once retro and modern.  Featuring both emerging and established designers, the shelves are stocked with today’s take on the perfect jean, the coolest kicks and a most excellent array of t-shirts.

Created as a store giveaway for their premier customers, Red Coles was tapped to interpret the 1970s iconic photo that has become the Addy & Ferro crest.

MTV / Staying Alive Foundation

The Staying Alive Foundation (SAF) is a global grant organization that encourages and enables young people around the world who are active in stopping the spread of HIV and AIDS. SAF commissioned Red Coles to design the 2005 World Aids Day T-shirt (pictured left) to be sold exclusively at the MTV Store in Times Square, New York.

The creative concept behind the design was a somewhat subtle yet firm call to action: Stop (the spread of the disease) Think (about what you’re doing) and Act (by lending a helping hand). The brown ink of the hand represents the people of all colours around the world affected by the disease. The orange text symbolizes caution and positive energy.

Match

Match is a super cool shop located in the resort community of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The store and web site stock new and vintage apparel & accessories for the modern day gentleman.

The client wanted a shirt design inspired by one of his favorite albums covers, John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme (Impulse! Records). Pictured left, the black, white and orange colourway is a nod to the signature colours used on all of the Impulse! album spines. For the artwork, Coles used his singular illustration style to interpret the legendary musician’s profile. The text on the shirt repeats the song’s haunting refrain, “A Love
Supreme.”

Amy Levine Designs

Amy Levine is a respected jewelry designer who believes that fine jewelry need not be stuffy. Levine feels that a $3,000 necklace can be worn just as easily on a daily basis with jeans and a t-shirt as with a little black dress.

To demonstrate that principle, Amy Levine Designs commissioned Red Coles to create a limited edition hand painted t-shirt to be worn at Levine trunk shows around the United States.

Inspired by items from Levine’s new collection, Coles chose the “Bullets” earrings as his muse and created the shirt that Levine is wearing here (pictured left).
